The Varanger Peninsula, which is washed by the waters of the Barents Sea, is almost the northernmost point of continental Europe. It is located about 300 km north of the Arctic Circle. Due to the climate and infertile soil, it is only very sparsely populated. Nothing grows here and nothing can be bred. People fish for a living. Tourism is attractive especially in the short summer. Tourists come here for fishing and bird watching. A large part of the peninsula, which falls within the natural biome known as tundra, is a national park called Varangerhalvoya. The indigenous Finno-Ugric inhabitants are called Sámi, or Laplanders in Czech. They eat mainly fish, giant crabs and fish again, sometimes reindeer. This place is a real periphery at the “end of the world”.

A snowkiting expedition to the northernmost part of Europe takes us to the places where the world’s toughest multi-day snowkiting race has been run, places where people live in harmony with nature and where the harsh subarctic maritime climate prevails.

COURSE OF SNOWKITING EXPEDITION VARANGER

You will arrive from Prague, with a transfer in Oslo to Kirkenes airport. There you will be picked up by our bus and taken to Kiberg, 235 km away, where we will stay and where our main “base” for snowkiting trips within the Varanger peninsula will be.
The house, which we have all to ourselves, has two rooms with three beds and one single room (for the “chief”), a living room, kitchen, bathroom, terrace, sea view and the hallmark of a Lapland village. It is nicely equipped and from the window you can see the sea, which is very close to the house.

The weather forecast will determine what happens each day. The emphasis will be on getting to know the peninsula as much as possible through snowkiting. This event will also include a two to three day crossing (1-2  nights in the wilderness in tents) on the VAKE (Varanger Arctic Kite Enduro) trail, crossing the Langdalen valley, and through the famous Falkefjell!

We start each day with breakfast at 8 am. and at 10 a.m. we’ll be heading out for a snowkitig, depending on current weather conditions. We will select a two to three day trip based on the best weather forecast for the event. Last year we managed 2 separate trips to Varangerhalvoja NP with an overnight stay in the wilderness. One trip was for 2 nights and the other was for 1 night. It all depends on the current conditions.

Prerequisite for participants:

  • moderately advanced kiters who know how to handle the kite (unpack, pack, restart, if it falls down, straighten it and take off again even in stronger winds)

  • bobsleighs for trips and crossing will be rented and driven by the strongest members of this expedition
